Good Welsh Win but where does it leave us?

First of all I’d like to apologise for not having put up a prompt post-match analysis of the Italy game.  There are many reasons for this, but perhaps one of the most pertinent is the fact that ultimately, in my opinion, there wasn’t really much to talk about.  The rain-dominated clash in Rome was a pretty dour affair, and Wales did what they needed to do to win the game. Can Wales still win the championship?

Make no mistake, the next two games against Italy and Scotland will be tough. It would be foolish to look too far ahead and take our eye off the ball in those games, but if we’re to have any hope of winning the championship then we know that we need to beat England at home on March 16th. Sam Warburton on the bench – not a shock, or a horror

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like these Six Nations breaks.  Two frenetic weeks of high-quality international rugby and then…nothing.  I’m very much looking forward to the campaign restarting against Italy in Rome in a week’s time.  So what to talk about in this intervening period? Continue reading

France 6 – 16 Wales

It might have been a dull affair on a terrible playing surface at a chilly Stade de France, but Wales finally got what they so badly needed, a win. The performance wasn’t great and we still look a mile away from our Grand Slam form of 2012, but at least we finally ended our 8 game losing streak. Continue reading

The team to face France

Having lost our opening game of the 2013 Six Nations, our boys face a tough task as they travel to Paris this weekend to face the unpredictable French.  Games against France are usually pretty tough at the best of times, but following France’s shock loss in Rome last Sunday, we can expect a wounded animal on Saturday at the Stade de France.  The team was selected at 12pm today and this article details a few of my musings on Howley’s selection. Desperate times…

…call for desperate measures. There is currently something badly wrong with Welsh Rugby and it’s not the kind of problem which can be solved with a bit of tinkering. Unfortunately, the time has come for difficult and unpleasant decisions to be made. We’ve still got 4 games to play in this tournament, but we need to make some big changes now. Continue reading

Wales 22 – 30 Ireland

So Wales have lost their first game of the 2013 Six Nations.  Pretty gutting eh?  As much as I feel proud of the gutsy second half performance from the boys, the fact remains that we didn’t deserve to win this game.  It was a game of two halves, with Ireland completely dominating the first and Wales coming back in the second. The team to face Ireland

The Welsh match day squad for the first game of the 2013 Six Nations was announced today. The biggest surprise was the inclusion of uncapped Dragons player Andrew Coombs. Perhaps the biggest talking point is the selection of Dan Biggar ahead of James Hook. Below is a brief assessment of Howley’s selection… Continue reading

Wales vs Ireland – who should play?

On Saturday we begin the defence of our Six Nations title at home to Ireland.  I think it’s fair to say that many people don’t give us a hope in hell of retaining the Six Nations and that is understandable.  I remain optimistic though and I wish to inform readers that I don’t believe that our recent poor run of form has been examined closely enough by the doubters.  Continue reading

Who should start at 10?

With Mike Phillips likely to start at 9, the question of who should partner him at 10 is in many ways a difficult one to answer. The half-backs will be the vital link between our forwards and our potentially lethal backline. Selecting our No.10 will probably be the most important decision that Howley will have to make. Get this one right and we stand every chance of doing ourselves justice, get this one wrong and Continue reading
