All the best with the blog lads, increased my rugby knowledge 10x already just by reading your informative opinions and views… would go as far to say your Rugby experts!
Hi, if possible could you retweet this message or post it on the Wales Rugby Facebook Page:
Once again Darth Vader will be invading Cardiff tomorrow before the Wales v Argentina game, as he has to collect for Macmillan Cancer Support for nicking Yoda’s cookies! He hopes to raise £5000 in one day, so please give generously – many of us know people who’ve had cancer or may even have it themselves, so let’s work together and we can boot cancer into touch for good one day! Thanks/Diolch Yn Fawr.
Thanks, I have tried to post it to the WRU FB page, but I have hit a ‘Like’ limit
Appreciate your help, many thanks and best wishes
Thanks for an excellent blog during the World Cup guys. Enhanced the enjoyment.
Can I ask if woodster still has a problem with Luke Charteris after he came back from the WC as one of the form locks in the NH?
Hahaha good question Dan. I’ve always been quite a big fan of Charteris myself. I’d like to hear woodster answer your question…
Good question dan. I wouldn’t say that I have a ‘problem’ with Luke; I certainly didn’t expect him to play as well as he did in the World Cup and I’m very happy that he played well and enhanced his reputation.
However, I personally felt that his performances were a little overhyped; Charteris is not an ‘all-round’, all action lock, he is very, very good in the lineout and his defensive work is certainly impressive. I do think though that he doesn’t offer as much go forward as he should do for a man his size. With our current back-row, we only have one genuine ball carrier in Toby, and as a result I think it’s fairly important for at least one of the locks to be able to carry ball. With AWJ being more of an ‘athletic’ lock as opposed to an ‘enforcer’ or a ‘bruiser’, I think that by playing him and Charteris we struggle to get the go forward required to generate quick ball and unleash our very potent backs.
I hope Luke continues to prove me wrong and adds this carrying element to his game, but I have to say that these are currently my concerns. In my opinion, AWJ is world class, and if fit should be the first lock on the team sheet which leaves only one space, which I would rather was filled by someone who can consistently get over the gainline like Bradley Davies (although he has clearly been off form for a little while now) or even Ryan Jones. I’m not saying that Luke can’t perform that function, but that I have seen very little evidence of it thus far. I feel that his body position going into contact is too high and upright, and if you’re 6ft10 you need to be making yourself as difficult as possible to tackle by accelerating hard and low into the the tackle.
In summary, did great for us in most aspects of his game in the World Cup, doesn’t carry enough ball for me and I think he’s overhyped. Jury’s still out.
